15. Can Technical Interns Extend Their Stay After the Contract Ends?

According to Japanese law, the maximum duration for technical interns is 3 years, or up to 5 years for the construction industry. Unlike general labor programs, the study and work plans for technical interns are pre-determined. Therefore, contract extensions are not allowed under the Technical Intern Training Program.
If an intern wishes to stay in Japan after completing their contract, they must switch to another visa type, such as the Specified Skilled Worker (Tokutei Gino) visa.
